Donate

As a small charity we are heavily reliant on donations and fundraising to enable us to keep supporting people with porphyria. Donating to the BPA enables us to continue doing the work that we do. Thank you in advance for any support you can offer – we appreciate your financial contribution no matter what the size.

Annual donations from our members are also a part of our income stream. Members will be added to our database to receive twice-yearly newsletters and be invited to our upcoming events. Members will be automatically sent patient information relevant to their porphyria as it is issued.

The suggested donation for members is £15 per year, which allows us to continue the work that we do (newsletters, helplines, conferences, etc.).

Whether you would like to become a member, make a regular donation or send a one-off gift, we’ve tried to make it as easy as possible to do.

Empowering Porphyria Patients

Join our campaign to fundraise for 2024’s Alfresco event, a residential activity weekend for children and young people affected by erythropoietic protoporphyria (EPP).

What is EPP?

EPP is a rare genetic condition that causes excruciating pain and skin damage on exposure to sunlight. Symptoms make daily activities, including education, sport and personal relationships a huge challenge – impacting negatively on physical health, relationships and, in the long-term, financial stability and psychological and emotional wellbeing.

How will the residential help?

Our participants will be encouraged to get involved in outdoor activities in a safe way. The residential will provide chances to take part in adventurous activities while taking advantage of evenings, shade and prevailing weather conditions to maximise adventure, whilst minimising risks.

Thanks to the generosity of our supporters and the National Lottery, we were able to take a group of young people on an Alfresco weekend in 2022.

Donate today to give more young people the chance to experience the mental and physical benefits of the great outdoors!

Gift aid

Please don’t forget that you can boost your donation by 25p for every £1 you donate. To be eligible, you must be a UK taxpayer and have paid more Income Tax and/or Capital Gains Tax than the amount of Gift Aid claimed on all donations in that tax year.

If your tax position has changed and you are no longer eligible to make Gift Aid donations, please do let us know as soon as possible. Donors must have paid sufficient Income and/or Capital Gains Tax on their donations.

Please contact treasurer@porphyria.org.uk or 0300 30 200 30 to let us know about any changes. For example, if you:

  • want to cancel this declaration
  • would like to change your name or home address
  • no longer pay sufficient tax on your income and/or capital gains

Also, if you pay Income Tax at the higher or additional rate and want to receive the additional tax relief due to you, you must include all your Gift Aid donations on your Self-Assessment Tax Return or ask HM Revenue and Customs to adjust your tax code.

How will my donation help?

A successful campaign will enable us to cover the majority of costs for up to 30 families affected by EPP to receive support to attend the Alfresco event. The following amounts show how funds raised could be spent.

£15 – initial consultation to assess patient/family needs

£30 – catering for a parent/sibling to attend to support the patient

£50 – half-day adventurous/challenging activities

£100 – family accommodation for the weekend

£180 – complete costs for a young person with EPP to attend (accommodation, catering and two day’s activities)

Thank you for helping to support our campaign!

Don't forget Gift Aid!

Whatever type of donation, if you’re a UK taxpayer, you can make your donation worth an extra 25p per £1 – at no extra cost to you – by completing a Gift Aid form.

How to leave a gift to the BPA in your Will

We respect that when it comes to writing your Will, most of us will want to make sure that first and foremost our families and loved ones are taken care of. However, if you are able to leave the BPA a gift too, you will need to know what’s involved and how to go about it. This article outlines what you need to know, such as how to make a Will and amend it for free.

Leaving a legacy gift

Including a gift in your Will is simple, but we recommend that you use a qualified solicitor or Will writing service to make sure all of the legal aspects of your Will have been covered and to make sure all your wishes and requirements are properly recorded. If you’re amending an existing Will, it’s also important to seek legal advice as you’ll need to make any changes using a codicil. This is a legally binding supplement and the document has to be signed, dated and witnessed just like your original Will.

What kind of gifts are there?

Some people choose to donate a fixed sum, such as £500 or £1,000. This is known as a pecuniary gift. Even a small gift would help support our work in the years to come.

Some people chose to donate a percentage of their estate. This is known as a residuary gift and is made from whatever is left in your estate after all debts and bills have been paid, and all specific and non-specific gifts have been distributed. Even just 1% of your estate could provide a huge difference to the work that we do.

Do gifts carry tax?

Unless the Will states otherwise, any gift passes free of tax. This means any tax must be paid by the estate and comes out of the residue before this is distributed.

Get the basics right

Whether you are writing a new Will or amending an existing one, you need to include details of the legacy you have chosen to leave, along with our name, address and registered charity number. That way, you can be sure your gift gets to the right place.

If you’re planning to add the BPA to an existing Will, we recommend you use a trusted solicitor or advisor. If you’d like to talk to us about leaving a gift in your Will, please contact us on 0300 30 200 30 or helpline@porphyria.org.uk
